After Tiger Woods’ Exit, Nike & Michael Jordan to Cut Ties With PSG, Citing Lionel Messi’s Exit

is once again in the headlines and not for the reasons you would expect. Following the Kylian Mbappe transfer saga that is dominating the press, Nike is said to be ending their partnership with the French club. The PSG Jordan kits, a result of Nike’s iconic collaboration with NBA icon Michael Jordan have been incredibly popular among fans and this development will be a crucial blow for the club’s upper management. Interestingly, Lionel Messi had a crucial role in Nike’s decision.

Nike’s decision to cut ties with PSG follows their split with golf icon Tiger Woods. Woods announced the end of his 27-year partnership worth $500 million with the Sports giant with an emotional message. With PSG and Tiger Woods gone, what could be next in store for Nike?

Ever since PSG and Nike signed the deal in September 2018, their partnership has been among the most popular and lucrative in sports entertainment. The resulting PSG-Jordan kits and sneakers were a huge hit! The club were the talk of the town following the world-record transfer of Neymar and the rise of Kylian Mbappe. They were expected to be a major European powerhouse and the Lionel Messi signing confirmed their status among Europe’s elite. Yet, recently the club has been on a downward trajectory with regard to sales and popularity and this has forced Nike to cut ties as per Footmercato.

The departure of Messi & Neymar has resulted in reduced marketability. Moreover, their poor performances in the UCL haven’t helped as well. With Kylian Mbappe heavily linked with Real Madrid, it is likely, that the Parisian club won’t be able to capture the market as it once did and this seemed to have forced Nike’s hand.
