FSU football is having to replace three quality starting defensive backs in their rotation with cornerbacks Renardo Green and Jarrian Jones as well as safety Akeem Dent. Defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. will be tasked with having to find productive replacements for them.

Defensive backs are very important to Florida State’s defensive scheme due to primarily running a 4-2-5. With such a high amount of secondary pieces being on the football field at one time, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller likes to be able to utilize a variety of players in the rotation to keep everyone fresh.

One Florida State defensive back that the national media has started to discuss is junior cornerback Azareye’h Thomas.

Thomas had a very productive 2023 campaign where he recorded 29 total tackles and 10 passes defended. Even with him sharing opportunities with other defenders in the rotation, the Niceville (FL) was able to make a name for himself.

The Seminoles were able to get in late with the former Class of 2022 four-star prospect during his recruitment. Thomas has emerged as a lanky 6’2 defender who can consistently cause issues for opposing pass catchers on the outside.

Florida State has talent in the cornerback room with players such as Fentrell Cypress II, Earl Little Jr. (if he doesn’t end up playing safety), Quindarrius Jones, Greedy Vance, Edwin Joseph, Charles Lester III, Cai Bates, Jamari Howard, etc.

However, Azareye’h Thomas could realistically see himself having a starting position at one of the outside cornerback spots. It will interesting to monitor how he develops throughout the spring and summer because the competition will be wide open.

Patrick Surtain Sr. has a multitude of talented options to work with as he looks to take the next step forward for his defensive unit that looks to generate more takeaways.
