West Ham captain Kurt Zouma finally breaks silence but it will likely just anger fans more

A lack of communication and increasingly poor performances from Kurt Zouma have not been lost on West Ham fans.

Many West Ham fans of a certain vintage will tell you the real meaning of the West Ham way.

Essentially it is that when the going gets tough, the real West Ham way is to be brave, front up, keep showing for the ball, never hide. It’s not just about attacking, free-flowing football.

So the actions – or inaction – of West Ham captain Kurt Zouma over the last two months has seriously angered many supporters.

Despite failing to win a game in 2024 so far and amid intense pressure on David Moyes, the man the Scot controversially made skipper following Declan Rice’s departure has maintained complete radio silence.

Until now.

Zouma breaks silence but fans still ignored

West Ham captain Zouma has finally broken his silence but it will just anger fans more.

Hammers supporters have heard absolutely nothing from Zouma despite the team’s failure to win any of their last eight games.

Fans at least expected Zouma to offer an apology, explanation or rallying cry in the wake of the club’s biggest home league defeat for 61 years against Arsenal. But nothing.

Another defeat followed at Forest with Zouma – and most of his teammates – dreadful again.

Well we have finally heard from Zouma. But if you are waiting for an inspirational call to arms or message to supporters then don’t hold your breath.

Because instead the captain has just been discussing his joy at having met up with Afrobeats music star Omah Lay at Rush Green this week.

“It’s the first time I’ve met Omah, but he’s a very nice guy,” Zouma told the official site.

What are Hammers media team thinking?

“You don’t get to see artists often as they’re busy with their schedules around the world singing, so to have him here is a great pleasure and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“I’ve told him how much my family, kids and wife love his music. I love his music as well, and now I’m lucky enough to meet him as there’s so many people who would wish to see him.

“Our backgrounds are connected, growing up with brothers, sisters and families in difficult areas. You have to go and provide for the family, and that’s what he has done and what I’m still trying to do. That’s what has brought us to the same vibe and why we’ve got a strong connection.

“He’s done great, to be fair. He’s come a long way to get where he is now, and I really wish him all the best.”

How utterly ridiculous that the first time we hear from our captain, after everything that’s gone on of late, is about this.

It is baffling that the West Ham media team thought it would be a good idea to put this out.

True West Ham leaders coming to the fore

After that Arsenal humbling, it was left to Vladimir Coufal – to speak up instead of Zouma. The Czech may not be playing great either but he at least had the cojones to front up to supporters and offer his apologies.

Then after Forest, Alphonse Areola assumed the captain’s role in addressing the fans.

It also appears that ahead of the huge clash with Brentford on Monday night, veteran Angelo Ogbonna will be communicating with supporters in the club’s official programme.

Hammers fans – like the club – have rallied around Zouma since then, backing their man in the face of abuse from rival fans.

And this is how he repays them? With radio silence.

Zouma has also been criticised by The Athletic this week for failing to step up as West Ham captain.
