“I play as hard as I play, I need my fu*** beer after the game” – Xavier McDaniel recalls Larry Bird’s reaction to the Celtics taking beer out of their locker room

Players drinking beer in NBA locker rooms is a story that has been often told. Xavier McDaniel is the latest to tell his tale.

During his recent appearance on Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson’s podcast, X-Man revealed that the NBA allowed two cases of beer in a team’s locker room. McDaniel said this was the case when he played for the Sonics, but when he moved to the Celtics, however, he said they banned the booze.

That was in 1985 when McDaniel was a rookie. In 1989, however, the Sonics drafted Shawn Kemp, and because he was underage at that time, Seattle had to ban beer in their locker room. When he came to play for Boston later in his career, X-Man said that the Celtics also took their beer out of the locker room in the aftermath of the Charles Smith incident.
