Marcel Siem has explained the confusion that led to his disqualification from the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
After pushing his drive right on the 18th, Siem hit a provisional ball, believing the area was out of bounds. In reality, it was a water hazard.
“I just wanted to let you know I didn’t cheat. I would never do that, so I got disqualified, unfortunately,” Siem said on Instagram.
He admitted the mistake:
“On 18, I pushed my driver to the right, hit a provisional thinking it’s out of bounds… I picked the ball up, and then just stupidly hit my fourth shot. Just kept going, made birdie with my second ball, so to say, and made a bogey.”
Siem only realized the error when he was about to sign his scorecard and called in a referee, who confirmed the DQ.
