Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods was all smiles after he and son Charlie narrowly lost the 2024 PNC Championships to Team Langer via a tough playoff on Sunday.
Tiger Woods and his 15-year-old son Charlie nearly pulled off a victory at this weekend’s PNC Championship in Orlando, only losing to Team Langer via a playoff. But despite agonizingly losing out, Woods reflected positively on the experience.
Charlie Woods surprised many by converting an eagle on a third hole and sinking his first-career hole-in-one on the 175-yard fourth.
The 48-year-old Tiger was asked how he described that moment as a father. “It’s one of the highlights that we’ve ever had. We were talking about earlier, he made his first eagle. Now he just made his first hole-in-one. It’s a magical two-hole stretch. I’m just so happy for him.”
“It was a lot of fun,” Woods said of the tournament as a whole. “It was back-and-forth, no one made a mistake today.” Charlie echoed the sentiment: “It was awesome. No one made a mistake today, and on top of that, I made an ace. I don’t think I can top that.”
Both Team Woods and Team Langer finished 15-under on Sunday to set up the decisive playoff. The win gave Bernhard Langer his sixth victory at the event overall.
The elder Langer captured his fourth title this year with his son Jason after winning two in the past with his son Stefan. Bernhard also competed at the PNC Championships, once known as the Father/Son Challenge, with his daughter Christina.
Woods walked all 54 holes with no signs of injury. The 15-time major champion battled ankle injuries in 2023 originally suffered during his 2021 car crash.
He had microdecompression surgery on his lower back in September of 2024. Prior to the 2024 PNC Championships, Woods hadn’t competed since the British Open in July.
Woods was brutally honest when asked how he felt he handled the “test” here this week. “Well, I’m nowhere near competitive shape. I’m a great scramble partner,” he said with a laugh. “We made a great team this week and that’s the whole joy of it, being out here with family.” Charlie and Tiger weren’t the only members of the Woods family to appear this weekend.
His daughter Sam, 17, served as caddy for the pair, while Woods’s ex-wife Elin Nordegen attended the event for the first time since 2020. She reportedly missed her son’s hole-in-one live and had to catch the highlight on television. Charlie, though, was extremely proud of his shot.
“It was a perfect seven-iron, so just kind of hit it,” he said. “Down off the left, a little cut seven. It was awesome. I didn’t think it went in. I don’t believe anybody until I go up there and see it.”
