Xander Schaffuele makes Ryder Cup decision following Rory McIlroy’s terrible comments on earnings

Two-time major champion Xander Schauffele has made it clear he will not accept payment for competing in the Ryder Cup. His decision comes on the heels of Rory McIlroy’s critique of Team USA’s choice to introduce compensation for participants in this prestigious event. The PGA of America has announced a break from tradition by compensating players, despite the norm of no remuneration for playing in the tournament.

Team USA captain Keegan Bradley was swift to declare that he would reject any payment, opting instead to direct those funds to charity. Schauffele has echoed this commitment, expressing his views on the matter nine months before the event. “I see this as an opportunity for a significant amount of money to benefit charity, and we’re prepared to face any backlash,” he stated confidently to reporters. While some of the other 11 players on Team USA may welcome the offer of around $500,000 (£395,000), Schauffele stands firm in his choice.

It has been reported that $300,000 (£237,000) of the payments to Team USA players will be donated—split evenly between a PGA of America program and a charity selected by the player. The remaining $200,000 (£158,000) is referred to as a stipend, which players can use as they see fit.

The United States will proudly host the Ryder Cup this September at Bethpage in New York. As reigning champions, Europe will make the journey across the Atlantic, yet they have not secured a victory on American soil since 2012.
